‘Rakeback’ as an Affiliate Product

rakeback graph

As you can see in the graph above, interest in Rakeback has declined along with the entire online poker market (since much of it closed to the US in 2011) but has remained stable in recent years, and major affiliates still earn mid five figures monthly.

What is Rakeback?

Poker players pay rake (around 4-5% of each pot) as they play, which is how poker sites make money.

‘Rakeback’ started as a deal whereby the player has part of their rake returned each month, anywhere from e.g. 27 - 70% of it depending on the site.

Players had to sign up to the site through an affiliate to receive Rakeback.

Why Was Rakeback Offered?

Poker sites pay commissions to affiliates for referring players, tracking referrals by cookie, just like Amazon.

Affiliates created rakeback as a way to incentive players to sign up through them - by paying players rakeback they were essentially throwing part of the money they earn back at players.

Poker Sites Allowed This?

Yes, unlike some other affiliate marketing methods online, you’re allowed to financially incentivize traffic. Poker affiliates would use slogans such as ‘get paid to play’.

It’s seen as a win-win situation, sites receive more players paying rake, players receive part of their rake back, and affiliates take a cut as the middle man.

It’s That Easy?

For years affiliates had an easy time making money, with lifetime affiliate contracts. Often players didn’t even know which affiliate they were tagged to, and in some cases players would go on to become huge rakers.

Professional poker players tend to rake from $50 - $500 / day. ‘Supernova Elite’ players on PokerStars for example rake $160,000 a year. A lucky affiliate could refer a high-volume player, then simply sit back and take their cut.

In more recent times however there have been some issues - now that poker is in decline somewhat, poker sites have more of a love-hate relationship with affiliates, ending contracts on a whim.

Other Affiliate Products

Poker players tend to use eWallets to avoid leaving a paper trail of online gambling transactions with their bank, many of which you can affiliate for:

  • Skrill
  • Neteller
  • Bitcoin Providers

They also tend to use VPNs for security over public wifi, and to avoid security flags on their account when playing while travelling. Some main VPN companies with affiliate programs are:

  • StrongVPN
  • Overplay
  • HideMyAss
  • ExpressVPN

Example Poker Affiliate Business Models

Below are some of the main affiliates in online poker, and the approach they take.

Focused on search engine traffic, features a 10 year old premium domain and seen as an authority site by Google. They are essentially a niche site focusing on technical information about rake, VIP programs, and reviews of sites.

For example they made an equivalent rakeback calculation tool in Java for PokerStars players, to get to #1 in Google for ‘PokerStars Rakeback Calculator’ - players are interested to know what their VIP rewards are as a rakeback percentage.

Another niche technical site, they focus more on attracting players through forums, notably the TwoPlusTwo forums, the largest online poker forum.

To advertise publicly on there requires purchasing a sponsored sub-forum for several thousand dollars. It’s a very valuable source of traffic however.

In the same vein, RakeTheRake have a TwoPlusTwo rep and provide players with rakeback or recommendations to sites with the best VIP programs for them.

By far the largest poker affiliate, PokerStrategy were actually bought out by a poker site (the iPoker Network) for 38.3 million Euros.

Their success came from offering a free online poker school, with introductory videos in multiple languages. They then offered a free bankroll to players who signed up to poker rooms through them, and advanced videos to players that raked a lot.

PokerNews have journalists covering live tournaments such as the World Series, and are one of the main sources of industry news. On the side they direct traffic to online poker rooms.

In Conclusion For Poker Affiliates

Some advice for a new poker affiliate would be:

  • Don’t invest too much in one poker site - they could change the terms of their affiliate deals at any time
  • Promote a range of US and RoW sites
  • Even if rooms don’t allow rakeback they usually pay affiliate commissions
  • Affiliate for training sites, software, and other related products on the side
  • Diversify into related niches like casino gaming, DFS and forex
  • Stay up to date with modern learning tools, browse forums, follow industry news (Pokerfuse.com and OnlinePokerReport.com are good) and get exposure via Twitch

  1. WOW Nader,
This is yet another wonderful but hidden niche. I do know that some people are making money from online Casino but that was some years ago.

I became afraid of this niche the first time i started blogging because my main monetization strategy then was with Google Adsense, you the days when you'll just set up a blog, create an adsense account, copy the script and paste all over your site and then make $$$$ as advised by the experts.

I learnt then that the almighty Google frowns at any site that's about gaming and online Casinos so, i took to my hills and tried to avoid doing anything with them.

Someone even asked me to write a review of his own casino site over at Linkedin then but i turned it down even though he offered to pay me a large sum for that but because i didn't want to annoy Google, i had to reject it.

But seriously man, this niche seems to be very lucrative and less competitive and its something one has to really look into.

    Thanks for sharing.

    • Nader Qudimat says:

Hi Theodore, you're making Google sound like the king of the world! They might be the "president of a powerful country" but that is all they are. There are many other ways to conquer, and if people find your website useful, they will not let Google decide if it is worthy.

Look at thisiswhyimbroke.com; They don't depend on Google, they use social media for traffic.

I don't even pay attention to SEO for my site and I'm getting some nice traffic from Google. So really, forget about SEO if you're trying to build a long-term sustainable business.

And that's in my own opinion and experience. Stuart doesn't even use SEO, he outreaches to other influencers and builds connections but yet Google is one of the top traffic sources for NicheHacks

So if you want something, go for it! As long as it is niche with demand.

Push through and you'll never regret anything. You've got nothing to lose.

  2. Inzamam says:

    Hello Nader,
Good to see you posting great niches out here :), but this one is totally packed. I mean this niche has huge competition which makes Affiliate marketing and ranking sites even harder. Like you already mentioned the niche is great o make huge money but needs some good investment into it too.
    Regards,
    Inzamam Pasha

    • Nader Qudimat says:

Hi Inzamam, I sure did post this but Stuart and his researchers did all the hard work. It is very competitive but who said you can't take a piece of the pie?

The whole world wide web is competitive, but everyone who works hard/smart enough can truly accomplish something out here 🙂 Do you plan to take part of this niche?

  3. mark J says:

    What a load of rubbish.

I already work in a similar online gambling field (not poker) but know the online poker market.

    Just a few points to make;
Your content is waaaay out of date
There is no way that the US is going to legislate across all states, you'll be lucky if there a 5 by 2017 The market is ultra-competitive with v high PPCs
There are hundreds if not thousands of affiliates in this market already
There is a lot of black hat in the SERPS on this so any newbie will struggle for months/years to rank
The real money in the market is affiliate (rev share/CPA) not books and apps
Your 'top blogs' omit almost all of the major super-affiliates in this market

Whilst I like niche hacks for uncovering markets that might be worth looking into, sorry but a) this is not a niche any newbie should go into and b) your report is very poor, factually incorrect and I guess was done by someone on fivverr for you.

You probably wont publish this but hey.... why let the truth get in the way of a good sell of your other products or recommendations money generators.

    • NicheHacks says:

We publish all comments good or bad. Surprise! 😉

We don't make any money by publishing these reports. They do cost a fair bit to create though and no definitely not made on Fiverr, that would save me a lot of money if possible.

There are thousands of affiliates in EVERY niche worth being in

Every niche that is worth being in is competitive, competition is a good thing it means the niche is profitable, has huge demand, lots of customers, lots of products to sell etc.

Search engines and ranking are just 1 way to get traffic, we don't focus on that here on NicheHacks. Unpredictable and not guaranteed...not something I'd spend much time on.

Agreed the main money is not from books and apps.

We may have missed some of the top blogs, we only cover a handful so we will enivtably miss some...care to tell us then who we should be including?

A niche that is so profitable and in demand like this is EXACTLY the type of niche a newbie should go into...there's just so much money flowing around everyone can have some.

      Thanks for your comment.
