For anyone who doesn’t know you, who are you and what are you all about?

My name is Dave and I currently run a few dozen niche travel blogs and my main site is selfmadebusinessman.com where I blog about business, entrepreneurship, and internet marketing.

I work full time on the internet while travelling.

How did you get started in internet marketing?

I started my first travel blog, acoupletravelers.com, about two years ago as a way to make some side money while I was backpacking around Asia and Europe.

Eventually we started getting offers from travel companies who wanted to buy links on the site –so we made quite a few businesses out of that.

Often friends and family don’t really ‘get’ this whole internet marketing thing or take it seriously, how do yours feel about it and how did they react when you first told them you were going to give it a try?

Yeah most don’t really get it and are not even sure that internet marketing is a real job.

I would say that people start to get it when you start to make money and until then you just have to deal with the potential negative energy and go for it.

What was your first ever website or niche?

Our travel blog acoupletravelers.com

If you had to give one piece of advice to a newcomer in the internet marketing world, what would it be?

Learn from the pros by finding out exactly how they are making money.

NOTE FROM STUART:
You could do this by examining a profitable business or website you’d like to emulate taking note of what they do well and how they do it and what can be improved on.
Reverse engineer their success through examining the type of content they put out, how they build their list, what sort of products they are promoting and how they promote them, where they get their traffic from and so on.
Then go out there and create something similar if not better.

What does it take to be a success in the internet marketing world in your opinion?

Focus is a big part of it.

There are thousands of shiny objects that can easily distract you from your goal and just eat up your time for weeks on end.

You have to focus on one project and see it through, then move on to the next.

Make sure you have the appropriate balance of reading/learning and actually doing.

It is easy to get lost in a forum for hours and accomplish nothing all day.

When choosing a niche, follow passion or money?

I say both, you should find where the two intersect. One without the other is useless.

One of the most common questions I receive from my audience is “How do I get started?”. What would you advise them?

Talk with a few internet marketers you admire and come up with a plan of action. Then follow through.

If you lost everything and had to start all over again with just a $100 budget, what would you plan of action be?

I would probably spend $100 on beer and drink off the fact that I had just lost everything. Then I would get down to work!

What are you working on at the moment, what are your plans for the future and do you have anything new in the pipeline you’d like to share with us?

I am looking into some new projects that I think have more potential than the ones I was currently pursuing, for example, SaaS (Software as a service).
